The NIE (Número de Identificación de Extranjero) is a personal identification number assigned to foreign nationals dealing with Spain for economic, professional or social reasons. It is not, by itself, a residence permit or a TIE card. Choose the procedure appropriate to your nationality and situation.
The procedure in five steps
1. Identify the right procedure and appointment. For a NIE assignment application, consult the Policía Nacional’s official instructions. An EU citizen’s residence registration and a non-EU national’s TIE are separate procedures. Check the appointment category with the relevant office; there is no guaranteed time when appointments are released.
2. Prepare form EX-15. Use the official form for NIE assignment and certificates, complete it according to the instructions and sign it.
3. Pay the applicable fee using form 790, code 012. Select the correct category and check the current amount on the Policía Nacional fee form. Follow the payment instructions and retain evidence of payment; do not rely on an old fixed amount.
4. Gather the documents. Check the identity documents, application, reason for requesting a NIE and proof of payment required for your case. If you are outside Spain, the official instructions provide for applying through Spanish consular offices.
5. Attend the appointment and follow the office’s instructions. Bring the required originals and copies and confirm the delivery or collection arrangements. Processing times vary; neither same-day issue nor a fixed TIE timetable should be assumed.
For a move to Barcelona, the relocation guide distinguishes EU and non-EU residence routes so you can prepare the correct paperwork.
