Updated 14 October 2026: distinguishing EU and non-EU routes, health coverage, business setup and the conditions of the inbound expatriate tax regime.

To move to Barcelona as a French-speaking entrepreneur, prepare your residence, business activity and daily life separately. Procedures depend on your nationality and circumstances; the language you speak does not determine the applicable administrative regime.

Which residence route applies to you?

EU citizen, including French citizens: you benefit from freedom of movement. For a stay longer than three months, prepare registration formalities and evidence matching your status. Consult Your Europe, registering your residence and the EU citizen registration certificate in Spain.

Non-EU national: check which residence permit fits your project. Our guide to Spain’s entrepreneur procedure explains the requirements for this route. A business project alone does not guarantee residence authorisation.

Prepare the list of required documents and appointments for the route you have identified. Check processing times and fees with the relevant service.

How should you prepare your business activity in Barcelona?

The choice between autónomo status and an SL depends on your project. Self-employed tax registration uses form 036: form 037 was withdrawn in February 2025. Source: AEAT.

An SL has a minimum share capital of €1. Below €3,000, the law requires a profit reserve and additional shareholder liability on liquidation if assets are insufficient. Source: article 4 of the Spanish Companies Act.

Our guide to starting a business in Barcelona details the points to prepare. For registration and choosing a legal structure, find contacts in the directory of French-speaking service providers.

Which health coverage and tax arrangements should you check?

Health coverage. Within the EU, the competent scheme depends on factors including your work and residence. Identify your rights and appropriate evidence rather than assuming everyone must have private insurance. Source: Your Europe, health coverage when moving abroad.

Tax. The inbound expatriate regime, often called the “Beckham law”, has eligibility requirements. It does not automatically follow from relocation or a business project, and the treatment of income must be examined. Source: AEAT, special inbound expatriate regime.

If you are considering this regime, also check the form 149 timetable with a professional before deciding when to start.

How should you organise your budget and where to live?

Compare recent listings and build your own budget: housing, bills, transport, health coverage, professional costs and a cash reserve. Check the terms of the housing or workspace you are considering, along with journeys relevant to your business.

For business needs, browse the guide to workspaces in Barcelona and the public Officeboard listings. The team confirms availability, prices and conditions for each enquiry.

How can you meet the French-speaking community?

French Tech Barcelona brings together French-speaking founders, professionals and talent. Start with ecosystem organisations and the events calendar. You can then apply for membership, subject to manual approval.

Talentboard introduces the candidate and recruiter processes. The podcast and video studio helps you prepare a recording in central Barcelona. For a specific question about your arrival, tell the community about your project.
